Truck driving is one of the easiest careers to start at any point in your life. You don’t need a degree—in fact, you don’t even need a high school diploma. All you need to do is complete a short truck driving course and pass your CDL test at the DMV.
In order to pass the CDL test in California, you will need a relatively clean driving record, the ability to pass a vision test and a medical exam, a sixth or seventh grade reading level, and of course excellent truck driving skills. At Dootson School of Trucking, we can help with that last qualification!
Just because you can qualify for a truck driving license doesn’t necessarily mean you are cut out to be a truck driver. Truck drivers work long shifts of up to 11 hours driving, or 14 hours driving and unloading cargo. This work requires serious physical strength and stamina. Truck drivers often spend days or weeks away from home. Some mechanical aptitude, basic math skills, and a stable work history are also required.
