Truck Driving Salary Expectations

First year truck driving salary for an OTR driver is $35,000 - $36,000. Local truck drivers are generally paid by the hour and get overtime, usually after 40 hours. Earnings of long-haul drivers usually depend on miles driven or hours worked, as well as seniority, and the type of truck operated. Wage scales differ from region to region and also often depend on the kind of freight carried. According to the ATA, first year earnings are in the $36,000 range, while second year drivers can earn over $40,000 per year. Some experienced, specialized drivers make $60,000 a year or more. The median pay for a trucker stood at $37,730 in May of 2009

According to the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics, median hourly wages for heavy truck drivers were $17.92 in May 2008. Drivers don't need a high school diploma to be hired.
